The Executive Director reports to the Museum Board of Directors, working primarily with the Board President as the designated liaison. The following areas of responsibility are essential.
Operations & Administration:
Manage daily operations of the Museum, including, but not limited to, opening & closure of the museum, accounting for monies collected, bank deposits, etc.
Hire, schedule, train and evaluate support staff
Order Museum Gift Shop merchandise
Maintains all Museum records and correspondence including membership rolls
Financial Management:
Oversee financial processing and controls, including bill review for payment approval, point-of-sale reconciliation, bank deposits, internal auditing, and coordination with the Board Treasurer to ensure accurate records and sound financial practices
Collection & Exhibits:
Maintain the Museum collections database, which includes ensuring all donation/loan documentation is complete and accurate
Creates visitor experience that presents the history and traditions of local Mardi Gras krewes
Evaluate all potential donations/loans in accordance with the Museum Donation Guidelines
Responsible for the up-keep, development, and installation of Museum exhibits and interpretive materials
Responsible for the care and safekeeping of the Museum collections
Programs & Community Engagement:
Build collaborative relationships with tourism, media, and community partners
Coordinate activities and events at the Museum including individual, school, and group tours
Promote the history and understanding of carnival season in Mississippi through museum programming, written articles, public speaking and media interviews
Fundraising & Development:
Lead grant research and proposal development to support the Museum
Collaborate with the Board on fundraising strategy and execution to support the Museum
Governance & Reporting:
Attend Museum Board of Director meetings and Biloxi City Council Meetings
Qualifications
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated experience in non-profit, museum, or cultural organization management
Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
Knowledge of standards and best practices for museums
Experience in retail and cash management
Appreciation of the history and traditions of carnival season, especially in coastal Mississippi
Willingness to work a varied schedule, including nights, weekends and evenings as needed
Salary: Commensurate with experience
